With a very singular and strong photographic or cinematographic language, the works presented in the exhibition
and the films selected for the screening, investigate the urban or political transformation -that occurred in the diverse
contexts addressed by the artists- and draws unexpected and complex relations between personal memory, history
and experience.

Personal narratives reflect upon historical and political changes, which often find a translation into specific
architectures, places and images. Buildings, industrial sites, holiday location or family houses become the central
character of the works presented. The 'return to place', the recall of familiar locations and images or film becomes a
subtle movement between architectures of memory and placelessness. Atopia, as defined by Roland Barthes, is a
singular place that resists taxonomy, stereotypes and territorialisation.It is a place in movement. The exhibition offers
a reflection upon the transitory structures of cultural representation and the experience of atopia,

Parallel to the exhibition, a film program will be presented in another location during the festival. These films present
unexpected perspectives on the inescapable process of urban transformation, from the city of Amsterdam to the
French suburbs or the megalopolis. Often made out of still images, and constructed on visual athese films reflect upon urban palimpsests and globalization.

‘Amsterdam Reconstruction’

A walk through the cultural ruins of the city of Amsterdam. Using a 35mm film tray with a pinhole, Schlomoff captures
the empty halls of the Stedelijk Museum, the Rijksmuseum, Gallery W139, and the cinema of Maison Descartes. It is
surprising to see how quickly you recognise the function of these rooms, even without the art works. The lay-out, the
white walls and the filtered light streaming in from above immediately carry you into the sacred world of the visual
arts. To highlight the power emanating from all these buildings for the arts, Schlomoff draws a parallel with the
dynamics of the Amsterdam harbour, where ships and cranes dance to the rhythm of the filmmaker's voice as he
counts down the seconds he needs to expose each frame.
"At first I just wanted to make movies but I didn't have a camera so I decided to build one myself, using the concept
of the camera obscura. I made my first camera entirely out of cardboard. Later I found an old aluminium charger of
35mm film in a second hand store. I had it altered so that I could forward the film manually, frame by frame. I
replaced the shutter with the pinholed sheet of brass. This charger can contain 100 feet of 35-mm film. What
interests me here is to explore the fragility of the image in order to weaken our certainties. My cinematic vision offers
a different image of the human who treads the city and of his imprints on the places that he has abandoned long
ago, such as urban and industrial fallows and the deserted countryside." J. Schlomoff

De keuze van Jérôme Schlomoff In overleg met de Franse fotograaf en filmmaker Jérôme Schlomoff (1961) is een programma samengesteld met recente films uit zijn oeuvre en werk van collega-regisseurs. Schlomoff filmt sinds 2000 met een zelfgebouwde 35mm 'pinholecamera', een camera zonder lens. Door een minuscuul gaatje in een lichtdichte doos filmt hij de wereld op zijn kop, in spiegelbeeld en in negatief. In het bekroonde new york zéro zéro (2006, 21'), portretteert Schlomoff New York als een verlaten en verwoest oord. Amsterdam réconstruction (2007, 19') is een wandeling langs de 'culturele ruïnes' van Amsterdam, met onder meer de lege zalen van het Stedelijk Museum en het Rijksmuseum. In Le Sténopé de Schlomoff (Christophe Galud, 1996, 6') wordt het Barcelonapaviljoen van Mies van der Rohe met zwarte doeken getransformeerd tot een reusachtige camera obscura. This Side of Paradise - Fragments of an Unfinished Biography (Jonas Mekas, 1999, 35') is een uit home movies gemonteerd portret van de Kennedyfamilie. Het programma bevat tevens een selectie uit Schlomoffs fotografische werk. De filmmaker is aanwezig voor een publieksinterview.

Vanaf september 2008 presenteren het Filmmuseum en De Filmbank het programma E*Cinema, een nieuwe maandelijkse serie met historische en recente experimentele films. Het Filmmuseum en de Filmbank werken sinds 2004 samen op het gebied van
distributie, conservering en onderzoek van en naar de Nederlandse experimentele film.

De serie E*Cinema besteedt aandacht aan de experimentele film in de brede zin van het woord. Het kan gaan om films die voortbouwen op de klassieke avantgarde of om werk dat de relatie tussen film en andere kunsten onderzoekt. Zowel de klassiekers als de allernieuwste producties komen aan bod: onconventionele films, die prikkelen door hun onderwerpskeuze, aanpak en vorm.

Als onderdeel van E*Cinema worden tweemaandelijks films uit de Filmbanktour vertoond, een reizend programma waarin de nieuwste, Nederlandse experimentele films en hun makers op de voet worden gevolgd. Daarnaast wordt vanaf november aandacht
besteed aan de geschiedenis van de experimentele cinema: van makers die de ontwikkeling van de experimentele en avant-garde cinema in de vorige eeuw sterk hebben beïnvloed tot internationaal bekende filmmakers en kunstenaars die in de afgelopen decennia gezichtsbepalend waren.

In het komend seizoen onder meer programma’s over de Oostenrijkse multimediakunstenaar Valie Export, de onlangs overleden filmmaker en kunstenaar Bruce Conner en de Nederlandse cineast en componist Frits Weiland. Het eerste E*Cinemaprogramma, op dinsdag 23 september, is gewijd aan een nieuw talent, de Franse filmmaker en fotograaf Jérôme Schlomoff (1961).

Je viens d'entamer les préparatifs pour la réalisation d'environ 180 internégatifs (6X10 cm.), d'autant d'images choisies dans les rushs originaux du film "Amsterdam reconstruction", en vue de réaliser les tirages argentiques de ces images.

Ci-dessus, la première image sélectionnée, projetée sur le margeur de l'agrandisseur. Il s'agit d'un vestige de pont tournant, qui servait aux chemins de fer, entre la gare d'Amsterdam et Westerdok. Aujourd'hui, c'est un restaurant, le OPEN. La ville a vendu pour 1 € symbolique ce pont au meilleur projet de réhabilitation...

1er partie : Le repérage dans les rushs avec la visonneuse 35mm. Ici, je ne fait pas passé le film dans la visonneuse, car j'ai besoin de faire un examen méticuleux au compte fil, pour choisir la meilleure image, celle qui sera la plus intéressante par ces détails, et sa qualité. Puis je noue un bout de fil à coudre blanc dans l'une des perforations pour la marquer.

2 ème partie : Installation de la visionneuse dans l'axe de l'agrandisseur, pour conduire le film depuis la bobine émetrice, jusqu'au passe film. Et construction d'une bobine réceptrice, avec manivelle de fortune... Il me restera à embobiner le film sur la bobine de droite, après chaque internégatif...

Rien que le repérage m'a prit 4 jours... Le reste de l'aventure à la prochainne note, pour comprendre ce qui va se passé...

Cherchant à rendre compte de l'expérience concrète des sans-abri, La Douceur dans l’abîme, fruit de la collaboration entre un cinéaste-plasticien, Jérôme Schlomoff, et un écrivain, François Bon, s’inscrit en faux contre les trois formes dominantes de la parole au cinéma et dans l’audiovisuel en général : dialoguer / questionner / écouter. Ces pratiques à la fois indispensables, toujours insuffisantes et souvent falsificatrices se contentent de laisser les locuteurs parler dans le flux, sous les espèces d’un spontané qui serait « le vrai », selon une réduction permanente de la parole à son caractère irréfléchi, et ce jusqu’à réduire l’imaginaire même du discours à ses manifestations les plus déstructurées. Attempting to adequately communicate the concrete experience of the homeless, La Douceur dans l’abîme, is the result of a collaboration between the cineast-painter, Jérôme Schlomoff, and a writer, François Bon. The film distances itself from the three dominant forms of speech in cinema and in audiovisual in general: the practices of dialogue, questioning, listening. These postures are at once indispensable and insufficient as well as often misleading as they simply let the speakers partake of a flow, under a judgement system where the spontaneous becomes equivalent to the “true“, valuing a person's discourse for its character as unprepared, unthought speech, and in this way reducing the very imaginary of the discourse to its most unstructured manifestations. Ce film sténopé propose une visite de la ville d’Amsterdam à travers les chantiers de reconstruction de quatre institutions culturelles qui sont : la salle de cinéma de la Maison Descartes ; le Rijksmuseum ; le Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam ; le centre d’art W139. Ces lieux sont actuellement en travaux. Le film se construit à travers ces 4 chantiers chargés d’histoire, où la magie de l’architecture mise à nu nous plonge dans un univers étrange et dont la caméra sténopé vient nous révéler la force poétique. Tout au long de cette balade, les éléments poétiques successivement rencontrés sont confrontés à la vision d’un monde industriel, en analogie ou en opposition, avec celle de la nature intacte. Cette vision d’Amsterdam permet de créer un lien dynamique entre les quatre chantiers. Il s’agit d’une histoire de reconstruction, reconstruction de la ville à travers notre propre reconstruction du regard.

This pinhole film offers a trip round the city of Amsterdam, through the building sites of four cultural institutions in the process of being re-vamped: the Maison Descartes cinema; the Rijksmuseum; the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum; the W139 art centre. The work is currently being carried out in these places. The film is constructed around four building sites full of history, where the magic of architecture laid bare plunges us into a strange world and where the pinhole camera shows us the poetical power.For the length of this journey, the successive poetic elements encountered, are confronted by the spectre of the industrial world, in analogy or in opposition, with that of nature which is intact. This vision of Amsterdam allows for the creation of a dynamic link between the four building sites. Its a story of reconstruction, reconstruction of the town around the reconstruction of our own take on things.

Dieser stenopierte Film versteht sich als Besichtigung der Stadt Amsterdam von der Seite ihrer Baustellen, von vier Kulturinstitutionen, die derzeit renoviert werden: der Kinosaal des Descartes Hauses, das Rijksmuseum, das Stedelijk Musaum Amsterdam und das Kunstzentrum W139. Der Film wird durch diese vier historisch bedeutenden Baustellen konstruiert, wo uns die Magie der bloßgelegten Architektur in eine sonderbare Welt eintauchen lässt und wo uns die stenopierte Kamera die Kraft der Poesie enthüllt. Während dieses Spaziergangs werden die poetischen Elemente, die nacheinander aufgegriffen werden, dem Blick auf die Industriewelt – analog zur intakten Natur oder aber sich dieser widersetzend – gegenübergestellt. Diese besondere Sicht auf Amsterdam ermöglicht, eine dynamische Verbindung zwischen diesen vier Baustellen herzustellen. Es handelt sich um die Geschichte einer Rekonstruktion, der Rekonstruktion einer Stadt durch die gleichzeitige persönliche Rekonstruktion des Blicks.

Este vídeo propone una visita a la ciudad de Amsterdam a través de las obras en construcción de cuatro instituciones culturales: la sala del cine de la Casa Descartes; el Rijskmuseum; el Stedelijk Museum; el centro de Arte w139, todas actualmente en fase de remodelación. Esta película se construye a través de estas cuatro obras cargadas de historia, donde la magia de la arquitectura desnuda nos sumerge en un extraño universo y donde la cámara de estenotipo nos revela su fuerza poética. A lo largo de esta balada, los elementos poéticos sucesivamente reencontrados son confrontados a la visión de un mundo industrial, en analogía o en oposición con aquel de la naturaleza intacta. Esta visión de Amsterdam permite crear un vínculo dinámico entre las cuatro obras. Se trata de una historia de reconstrucción de la ciudad a través de nuestra propia reconstrucción de la mirada.

L'exposition vient d'ouvrir, si vous êtes dans le coin n'hésitez pas à venir la découvrir, c'est un beau voyage...

C'est aussi l'occasion de voir le film projeté dans l'une des caves du Casino. L'écran de projection est fixé sur un mur décrépit de la cave, ce qui permet la mise en abîme des lieux filmés, en l'état de démolition, avec le lieu de la projection. La musique hante avec mystère l'espace, la même mise en abîme surgie de la bande son, dont les fracas modulent de la même manière qu'au moment de leur enregistrement. Ouvrez vos yeux & regardez avec vos oreilles...

Confronté quotidiennement à l’offensive de la science et des technologies digitales dans tous les domaines de la vie, l’homme contemporain est obligé de vivre simultanément dans le monde réel et virtuel, d’être à la fois ici et ailleurs : cela lui procure un nouveau sens de lui-même, lui ouvre de nouveaux moyens de penser et de percevoir la présence humaine.
